Ethiopia: a new trademark law - new applications, renewals and
maintenance of IP law acquired.
On July 7, 2006 a new trademark law was issued, which will
modify, and in part simplify, the Ethiopian trademark registration
system.
The new regime will enter into force within six months from the
approval of the Implementing Regulations.
The main aspects of the new legislation are the following:
in order to maintain the validity of acquired rights (trademarks
already filed and/or registered before the new law enters into
force), it will be necessary to file fresh trademark applications
within 18 months from the date when the new law becomes effective;
the period of validity of registrations and renewals is extended
from 6 to 7 years;
In order to maintain the rights acquired and to benefit from the
provisions of the new law, it is advisable to take timely action
with respect to eventual new applications and Barzanò &
Zanardo remains at your disposal for further information and updates
in this respect.
