Sixth
Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development
of the European Union (2002-2006).
On January 9, 2003 a seminar was held at the Milan offices
of Farmindustria concerning the implementation of the Sixth Framework
programme of the EU, which provides for financial support to scientific
and technologic research, and is also aimed at contributing to
the creation of the European Research Area (EU Council Decision
of 27 June 2002, published in the Official Journal on 29.08.2002).
The seminar was organised by Tecnofarmaci S.C.p.A. of Rome (a
consortium of companies aimed at the development of pharmaceutical
research), with a contribution of Barzanò & Zanardo,
Rome Office.
The major issues of this new Framework Programme were illustrated,
with particular attention to the quite relevant aspects of novelty
in comparison with the previous Framework Programmes, i.e Networks
of Excellence and Integrated Projects, concentration of the fields
of interest into seven specific Thematic Priorities, differences
in the Core Contract with the EU, necessary presence of a Consortium
Agreement between the participants.
With reference to the areas more closely related to pharmaceutical
industry, the thematic areas 1.: Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology
for health and, to a lesser extent, 5.: Food quality and safety,
and 6.: Sustainable development, global change and ecosystems
were considered, with an analysis of the requirements for participation.
The first calls for proposals were published in the Official
Journal, C315, on December 17, 2002. The seminar stressed that
the time limit for submitting proposals in the Thematic Area 1
is March 25, 2003.

The same subject has been dealt with on January 13, 2003 at the
headquarters of the Italian CNR (National Council of Research)
in Rome, directly by officers of the Directorate General RTD of
the European Council, and of the Italian Ministry of University
and Research (MIUR).
